Finally finished my re-watching of Esmeralda, the sweet viewing of nineties novelas even if you hate the hero. Esmeralda is a beautiful telenovela with great casts, nasty villains and a heroine growing from an ignorant peasant to a smart and kind nurse.

However, the worst part is Jose Armando, who might be one of the most disgusting protagonists in Televisa (from a moral standpoint) at least Manuel Fuentes Guerra was a man of his times. This is like watching Marimar or Camila again (oh Eduardo Capetillo and his handsome but stupid heroes).
Not only is he a misogynist and abandons a woman because of pride, however he constantly gets jealous about Esmeralda’s success and new relationship. But when it's confirmed to him that Jose Rodolfo is his son now “fights” (aka becomes a selfish asshole) for her.

Pride… that seems to be a common trait on annoying leads.

Colunga is stunning here and his performance was an improvement from Maria la del Barrio which i watched last year and he’s pretty bad in it.

Controversial take but I also can loath Gracielita. I get her obsessive passion that got her killed (she really needed therapy) for Adrian (I’m still wondering why Alejandro Ruiz never got a leading role), and maybe this is the first time she fights for something in her life, this can be relatable to some.
But as you may know, being obsessive over anyone is not very healthy, perhaps this was Fiallo’s thesis with the character.

This is my point with this novelas they evoke emotions in me, that’s why people continue to re-watch them several years even if the leads infuriate you or several plot points are slow.
Modern televisa novelas dont evoke anything on me.
