Finished last friday on tlnovelas.
Since I had watched most of Yolanda Vargas Dulche’s stories (María Isabel, El Pecado de Oyuki, Rubi) I can finally say Alondra might be my favorite of them.
There were some issues here, most of it with the pacecing, it’s clear this is not plot driven story but a character driven one, similar to Corazón Salvaje.
The main “antagonist” has her redemption before chapter 30. After that the "villain” becomes the life choices of the characters. Meaning that from here are the three leading characters for the rest of the story and this is clearly not for everyone... but it was for me.
And unlike CS93 I found Alondra mesmerizing in every single way.
Alondra being ghe story of a wealthy white young woman who becomes the mistress of an older man might be the most controversial of Yolanda's stories but for me it’s certainly way less questionable than a white actress playing an asian or an indigenous character.
Alondra as a character just fascinates me, some poeple don’t seem to realize that part of liberation and independence it’s not just to vote of work but also to fuck things up.
First of all she is like 18-21 years old, and also belongs to a wealthy family meaning he has access to education but not to find a job suited to her knowledge.
In one part of the novela she is looking to work in clergy and administration but the men won’t hire her. However this conflict doesn’t include women of lower income like her maid Librada. Nobody questions her working, she’s lower class and brown, she has no option.
She also is accepting of women of non traditional backgrounds like Leticia who is an actress and singer. Funny how in 20-30 years this will turn into an elite position in Mexico (and most of the world).
Her interaction with men seems a bit off for the times, she flirts with all them but has no intentions other than them admiring her.
Some people think that when she starts to get involved with men she becomes a bit submissive but I sense more of a survival instinct.
Most people think the reason she falls for Bruno is father issues. At first it seems probable, while Baldomero is a loving father his's still just “the father”. So he thinks his role is to provide and "protect" but not to get too involved with the child.
Baldomero is established early as someone who talks openly with Alondra and lets her have freedom as he trusts her, but it’s more about not worrying much about her because he is more concerned about his own (sexual) life.
However I think there is a simplier reason for her atraction to him: the morbid curiosity of young people for older people, which a lot of the time it has nothing to do with parent issues and more to do with how society establishes gender roles, yo can see this when Alondra says Bruno embodies her ideal of a “perfect man”.
With Carlos is pretty much the same, but now Alondra knows she has few options to progress in life other than to have a husband and his also also follows all the traits she needs on a man at that time, including making her laugh in the rough times she has been into recently.
The issue with Bruno is that he is married, with Carlos is that he's mentally disabled (or at least on the autism spectrum).
I mean even nowadays people still think autism can be cured with bleach. I can't imagine what I would be like in 1900-1910. I do love how at the end Carlos is willing to share more time with his disabled siblings as what they need the most is being near the family.
But the biggest and most revolutionary aspect of Alondra’s character is that she is polyamorous. She is in love with both men in her life, in different ways but both valid in a romantic, platonic and sexual aspect.
Most of time when the leading female has two love interest is always that she is really in love with one of them and the other is “just a friend” o even a father/brother figure (Cañaveral de Pasiones, Laberitnos de Pasión, La fea más bella). Or trancisions from one love to another (Amor Real, La que no podía Amar) but never in love with both. Here is clearly not that Alondra has geniune feelings for both.
Even if there’s jealousy that both Carlos and Bruno would never “share” Alondra’s love and she also wouldn’t share Bruno with Tina ( his wife).
It’s one thing that the relationships are monogamous but another is what the person is feeling, obviously the whole problem is the lack of honesty.
